David Scott O’Hearn David Scott O’Hearn, 54, of Savannah, Georgia passed away peacefully at home with family on Sunday, September 17, 2023. He was born in Morristown, New Jersey on April 19, 1969. The son of Lawrence Stephen O’Hearn and June Audrey Opdyke O’Hearn, he grew up in Chatham Township and Normandy Beach, New Jersey. Prior to high school, David was a nationally-ranked age group swimmer who set several New Jersey State swimming records in the breaststroke and the individual medley. During his high school years, David sailed together with his father, mother and brother Steve aboard the family’s Sanderling Class Catboat for the Normandy Beach Yacht Club in the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association, winning two bay championships in 1987 and 1988 and placing third as the skipper of the boat in 1989.

He attended both the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Babson College in Boston, Massachusetts. He spent the early portion of his career as a trader and once held a seat on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. He was working on the floor of the Stock Exchange during the Black Friday mini-crash of October 13, 1989 as well as on September 11, 2001, only a few blocks from the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The experience of 9/11 led David to leave the New York Stock Exchange and become an Emergency Medical Technician in Savannah, Georgia. He also travelled to Guatemala with Faith in Practice on medical mission trips.

After several years in Savannah, Georgia, David moved to Staunton, Virginia and continued to help others as an EMT as well as caring for the elderly in a nursing home. In Staunton, he purchased a one hundred seventy five year old farm house and spent his free time involved in projects in the pursuit of refurbishing the home. Although David had a strong personality, he also had a kind and gentle side. He had a big heart and doted on his two dogs, Ursa and Buddy. At one time he cared for over twenty ducks on a pond on his property. David had an inquiring mind and was knowledgeable about many topics. He enjoyed in-depth conversations about business, the stock market and politics.

He is predeceased by his father Lawrence Stephen O’Hearn of Savannah, Georgia. He is survived by his mother, June Audrey Opdyke O’Hearn as well as his brother L. Stephen O’Hearn, Jr., sister in law Beverly G. O’Hearn, nieces Erin Audrey O’Hearn and Lauren Frances O’Hearn and his nephew L. Stephen O’Hearn, III, all of Savannah, Georgia. He also is survived by an Uncle Brian O’Hearn of Saratoga Springs, New York and many cousins throughout the Eastern United States.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at the Skidaway Community Church, 50 Diamond Causeway, Savannah, Georgia.
